As coordinator of the IMES research into networks of migrant organisations, political mobilisation and the institutional design of multicultural democracies, Tillie will speak about the way migrants shape new forms of citizenship, since they are part of more than one society. To introduce the excursions of the day, the lecture will highlight how receiving communities try to incorporate migrants and make them part of their society.

Excursions

Excursion 1:   Visit to Ibn Khaldoun                                               By Salih Turker

Ibn Kahldoun is a Moroccan mosque-organisation. You can expect a guided tour through the mosque, followed by a presentation about the organisation. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to speak to the representatives of the organisation about migrant participation. Please keep in mind not to dress too informal and that it is not allowed to wear shoes inside the mosque’s sacral rooms.

Excursion 2:   Visit to Amsterdam-West                                        By Fatima Zohra

This excursion will visit Amsterdam-West, where you will get presentations on several integration projects for the local community. ENIP (Dutch abb. For “And now something Positive”) will give an impression of its mission: tracking left-behind youngsters and giving them a job to prepare gathered materials for port to Morocco, to be handed out to the poor there. You will also have the opportunity to discuss with two former police agents, who have decided to quit their jobs and start supporting Moroccan youngsters who are prosecuted by the authorities. Lastly, the hugely popular local community leader for Labour Ahmed Marcouch will meet you.

Excursion 3:   Visit to SOMVAO                                                    By Ali Waare

SOMVAO is an organisation for Amsterdam’s Somali community. It is aimed at enforcing the participation of the community in local life. First, Waare will present his organisation and give an impression of the minority’s characteristics and its participation in the community. Then, there will be room for discussion.

Excursion 4:   Guided tour through “De Baarsjes”                       By Henk van Waveren

Excursion 5:   Guided tour through “De Baarsjes”                       By Wim de Graaf

These two local community leaders will lead you through one of the most multicultural parts of the city. The local chairman will first welcome you. The tour will include a visit to a local project called “Building citizenship”, a project for left-behind youngsters and  places in the neighbourhood.

Excursion 6:   Naturalisation Ceremony

A small group of 10 persons will be allowed to visit a naturalisation ceremony at the City Hall. The ceremony, which will begin at 14:30, is a new feature in The Netherlands. Last year the integration minister Rita Verdonk decided to start the ceremonies in order to enforce immigrants’ affiliation with their new home country. In the ceremony immigrants receive their new passports. Afterwards, there will be a possibility to speak the new-become Dutch.

City Hall meeting

After the workshops, we are all invited at Amsterdam’s city hall for a short gathering. Our host will be Marco de Goede, local counsellor for left-wing GroenLinks, who will address us  first. Afterwards, we will speak about the theme in a more informal way, as drinks will be provided!

Evening programme

Tonight, you are free to go wherever you like. Check the next pages of this booklet to get an impression of Amsterdam’s hotspots!

Workshops

Workshop 1: Monarchy and the nation state                                By Coos Huijsen

The most practical workshop of the day will take the Netherlands as a case. Drs. Coos Huijsen, historian and former member of parliament for the Labour Party, has published on the need for national social cohesion in the Netherlands. Moreover, he is an expert in the Dutch monarchy and interviewed the Dutch Queen for his book “Beatrix : De kroon op de Republiek” (“Beatrix : The crown to the republic”). His workshop will be about Dutch social cohesion and will discuss the role of the national monarchy as a binding factor.

Workshop 2: The void of European identity                                  By Jeanette Mak

A second example is the two hour workshop that will be given by dr. Jeanette Mak. Dr. Mak graduated in International Relations at the University of Amsterdam and took a masters in European Studies in Brugge. Her PhD thesis (European University Institute, Florence) deals with the role of the European Commission and the national governments in achieving public acceptance of the euro, and explores whether the way they communicate ‘Europe’ has changed since the lack of legitimacy of the Community became apparent in the early 1990s. Her lecture will be about that lack of legitimacy the European Community is facing now. It will discuss the question why citizenship remains oriented toward the European nations instead of the European level.

Workshop 3:  The nation state revisited?                                      By Boris Slijper

UvA PhD Boris Slijper will teach a workshop about the suddenly recurring importance of the national level. After World War Two the meaning of the nation state became less and less defined in terms of ethnicity. Ideals of globalization and international cooperation became a dominant discourse. However, the last five years show the rise of nationalism. Political leaders like Tony Blair and Nicolas Sarkozy have made the importance of national identity an important aspect of their political framework. Slijper will try to find, together with you, the answer to the question how this new rise of nationalism should be characterized. Is it just a temporary backlash in a globalizing world, or is the nation state really being revisited?
