Rethinking Development:
Innovative Policies for Social and Economic Advancement

Tickets are available here

The International Association for Political Science Students is launching its Call for Papers for the Academic Convention 2018 in Singapore. The theme of the convention will be “Rethinking Development: Innovative Policies for Social and Economic Advancement.” This year, we are partnering with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), an inter-governmental organisation that aims to strengthen relations between Asia and Europe. An annual event, the Convention is one of the largest international conferences for students of political science, international relations, and related disciplines.

The Theme

In today’s increasingly globalized world, with enhanced technologies, transnational networks, and international cooperation, there is vast potential for reinterpreting the way we run our societies – in particular, how we conceptualize development. By challenging the traditional methods to tackling societal issues, we may discover diverse approaches to ensure the growth and stability of all nations, as well as promote the human rights and well-being of their citizens.

Devising creative solutions begins with rethinking development through a variety of angles. For example, in addition to economic growth, we can adopt strategies and frameworks to engage environmentalism, democratic sustainability, and freedoms and human capacities (Sen, 1999). In this way, policy-making for developmental challenges should have a broad understanding of development and encompass a greater range of objectives which are interconnected and serve societal advancement.

Against this backdrop, innovation plays a key role in strengthening solutions and adapting policies to the changes of a rapidly globalizing society. Because an extremely broad array of questions are relevant to rethinking development, we welcome papers exploring many subjects, including but not limited to:

  • International development
  • Challenges and opportunities of local, regional and international development
  • Key actors in the innovation process
  • Theoretical and empirical analyses of economic development
  • The link between security and development
  • Human rights
  • The role if innovation in the development process
  • State building processes
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to economic development
  • Case studies focusing on different regions

Multifaceted developmental policies require the coalescence of many fields, from political sociology to economics to international relations. We thus encourage you to bring your unique perspective and share your case studies, proposals, and ideas in the dynamic intellectual environment of the Academic Convention. Collaboration breeds innovation, so we are all the more excited to welcome you to participate and join the discussions.
