We have been fascinated by politics for millennia. The Greek Aristotle’s notion of humans as ‘political animals’ marks one of the first associations that links ‘people’ to ‘the political’, however, what this link means remains far from clear because of the historical transformations of the concept of politics. Throughout time, the concept of what ’politics’ is and what it is not has varied depending on the historical and political context of the time. By justifying slavery, Plato and Aristotle denied slaves the character of political actors; and in Republican Rome, the plebeians and aristocrats had a different political scope of action according to their condition. In contemporary times, current dilemmas about the boundaries between ’politics’ and the ’nonpolitical’ appear in discussions such as the role of bureaucracies on policy making, the functioning of international organizations and actors such
as the UN, EU, Council of Europe, the African Union, or UNASUR on politics issues, or the controversies on ‘social sensitive areas’ during negotiations of trade agreements.
A reflection around the meaning of politics should also deal with some key concepts like ‘Institutions’, ‘Regimes’, ‘Conflicts’, ‘Human Rights’ etc. in a non-conventional way. The discussion about the meaning of politics requires moving our focus beyond the formal machinery of the government. And in so doing it, this discussion encompasses a whole array of layers and a multitude of arenas, going beyond the traditional state-focused research. Moreover, a thorough examination of our major topic, ’the Meaning of Politics’, it will also be necessary to explain how the political realm interacts with the economic, social, cultural or legal realm.
