Under the banner of ‘Humanitarian Politics: Imagery, emotion and public diplomacy’ three members and the coordinator of the Academic Think Tank gathered in Budapest to welcome participants to the opening plenary panel of the World Congress. The three members presented their work on visual representation of humanitarian themes and the role of funding and political marketing.

The panel critically reflected upon the use of the ‘White saviour iconography’ and related images of vulnerability and inaction of beneficiaries and engaged with one another and the audience in a lively dialogue that proved to be the perfect preparation for the expert panel on Migration on the following day during which one of the speakers remarked upon the level of preparedness of the audience.

This panel has been a highlight of this year’s ATT bringing together members from four countries and two continents to meet each other in person for the first time.
