Call for Applications 

for the Academic Coordinator

of the International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS)

Deadline for submitting applications: 15 August 2017.

The International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) is launching a Call for Applications for its Academic Coordinator (AC). The position of the AC is a newly established one within the IAPSS Academic Department that builds on the successful experience with the position of the Academic Think Tank Coordinator.

The AC will not only oversee the 2018 Working Group of the IAPSS Academic Think Tank (ATT) but will also lead it as the Academic Committee for the two main IAPSS conferences, the IAPSS World Congress and the IAPSS Convention. Thus, this unique position encompasses the management of a talented group of senior students and junior scholars as well as the roles similar of a co-convener of a major academic conference.

Specific responsibilities include

  • developing the theme of the 2018 Working Group/Academic Committee of the IAPSS ATT which is linked to the 2018 IAPSS Annual Theme;
  • drafting the Call for Applications for the members of the 2018 Working Group/Academic Committee and executing the selection of the candidates, in cooperation with the Head of the Academic Department;
  • the general management and continuous development of the 2018 Working Group, with emphasis on contributions at main IAPSS conferences, in the IAPSS blog A Different View and IAPSS journals, as well as external events and publications;
  • drafting the academic content of the Call for Abstracts for the IAPSS World Congress 2018 and IAPSS Convention 2018;
  • overseeing and coordination of the Academic Committee responsible for the evaluation process of the submitted (1) abstracts (2) travel grant applications from the perspective of their academic quality and (3) papers to the IAPSS World Congress 2018 and the IAPSS Convention 2018;

Other responsibilities may be allocated upon discussion and mutual agreement with the Head of the Academic Department.

 The position requires:

  • a high degree of mutual responsibility, motivation, self-initiative and dedication, combined with reliability and flexibility with regards to the work in a highly international environment with a strong intercultural competence;
  • readiness to devote at least seven hours per week during 16 months (September 2017 – December 2018) to the execution of the various tasks that come together with the position;
  • excellent command of the English language (spoken and written);
  • current enrolment in a political science or related programme at a graduate or a PhD level or graduation from a graduate or a PhD programme within five years from the date of application;
  • strong communication skills;
  • experience with academic research;
  • experience in and willingness to work with a high degree of organizational and conceptual freedom, but punctual and committed to adhere to work-related frameworks.

 It is beneficial if candidates have:

  • experience with the coordination of academic or non-academic working groups;
  • publications or other research outputs (e.g. conference presentations) on a topic or topics linked to the IAPSS Annual Theme 2018.

Framework of the Position

The position is – as all other positions within IAPSS – voluntary and unpaid, and applies for the period from 1 September 2017 to 31 December 2018.[1] It is executed based on a signed volunteering agreement specifying the main responsibilities. Costs and expenses related to the execution of the position (e.g. for travel, accommodation, public transport) are covered by IAPSS (budget allowing). Participation in the board meeting connected to the IAPSS World Congress in April 2018 and the IAPSS Convention in 2018 is strongly encouraged and the related costs to a given limit are covered.

IAPSS Membership

Occupying the position implies that you are a member of IAPSS at the moment of your installment. IAPSS membership embraces a wide range of benefits and services and comes at a student-friendly rate of either 10 or 15 EUR p.a. depending on your country of origin. Discounted rates are available for two-year memberships.

Please send your CV, a letter of motivation (max. 1 page, referring to your academic experience, skills, interests, and plans related to the development and promotion of the IAPSS ATT/Academic Committee) and one paper (published or unpublished essay, thesis extract or other academic text of maximum 15 pages and preferably related to the IAPSS Annual Theme 2018) to academic@iapss.org no later than 15 August 2017.

All applicants will be notified within 7 working days from August 15. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a Skype interview. The installment will take place on September 1.

[1] Formally, the IAPSS Internal Regulations require the position to be renewed from the new legislative mandate of the Association starting as of 1 June 2018. However, as a custom the mandate is renewed in case of mutual satisfaction with the executed tasks and responsibilities.

Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is the executive body of the association. It consists of the President, Secretary-General, Treasurer, Head of Academic Department, Head of Events Department, Head of Congress Management and Head of the International Cooperation & Public Relations Department. Members are elected to this body at the General Assembly, taking place in April each year.
