April 24 – 28, 2018 | Paris, France

Deadline for Abstract Submissions: November 12, 2017, 23:59 (CET)

The International Association for Political Science Students launches its Call for Papers for the IAPSS World Congress 2018, which will take place in Paris, otherwise known as ‘the City of Light’. Join us at the largest annual international conference for students of Political Science, International Relations and related studies in 2018!

The Topic

Globalization has been compared to a force of nature; it is something we cannot stop and has profound effects on society. However, both in scholarly and societal debates there is disagreement on the benefits and disadvantages of globalization. Furthermore, there is substantial discord on diversity, an offshoot of globalization, and its impact. This, in part, is because one’s view of globalization and diversity is influenced by age, gender, culture, religion and region. Consequently, these divergent perspectives lead to spirited debates at international, national and local levels. In continuing the dialogue, the IAPSS World Congress 2018 seeks to provide a platform in which scholars investigate and discuss globalization, diversity and their broad effects on the economy, culture, political system, environment and other critical areas of societal concern.

Call for Papers

The IAPSS World Congress 2018 seeks to establish an academic discussion about how globalization and diversity affect various facets of society. As an international conference, we hope that the different methodological and cultural backgrounds of our participants will enrich this platform with innovative research and strong academic contributions.

We welcome papers from undergraduate, graduate and PhD students, as well as from junior scholars from different academic perspectives such as comparative politics, international relations, international political economy, political theory, security studies, public policy and administration, human rights, regional and area studies as well as political psychology and behavior studies, and public (international, European, constitutional) law, gender studies, among others. Studies on research methods (political methodology) are also invited.

We particularly welcome submissions on topics closely linked to the World Congress Theme:
⎯ Normative and theoretical views of globalization and diversity;
⎯ Assessment of how globalization and diversity are measured/evaluated;
⎯ The role of actors in shaping globalization and diversity initiatives;
⎯ Globalization, diversity and the economy (capitalism);
⎯ Globalization and diversity in domestic politics;
⎯ Diversity in political, sociological and legal research;
⎯ Diversity in democratic, hybrid and non-democratic settings;
⎯ Political parties and diversity;
⎯ Cooperation among diverse polities;
⎯ Diverse tools in political communication;
⎯ Globalization and human rights;
⎯ Globalization and international institutions;
⎯ Globalization and public law;
⎯ Globalization and security;
⎯ Globalization and the environment;
⎯ Globalization and culture (Glocalization);
⎯ Globalization and migration;
⎯ Globalization and the media.

We also look forward to receiving submissions dealing with other key phenomena in Political Science and related studies, including (but not limited to):
⎯ the concepts of power, authority and legitimacy;
⎯ political crises;
⎯ models of democracy and regime types;
⎯ role of the non-state actors in international relations;
⎯ international organizations in the contemporary international affairs;
⎯ democratic transitions;
⎯ theories of development.

Guidelines for Abstract and Papers Submissions

Please send us your abstract of no more than 250 words through the online form. This form also includes the name of the author(s), the title of the paper, key words, home university, and email address(es). Abstracts should be submitted by November 12, 2017. Selected candidates for student panels will be informed by December 8, 2017 and provided with the paper submission platform. Full papers must be submitted by February 25, 2018.

Congress Registration

Please note that once your abstract is selected, and in order to present your paper at one of the student panels, you will need to register for the conference by purchasing your ticket in the IAPSS Web Store (https://www.iapss.org/shop/). The tickets for the IAPSS World Congress 2018 costs EUR 99. You can purchase it here, and read more about what is included in the price on our Registration page. The deadline for paper presenters to register by purchasing a ticket is February 25, 2018.

IAPSS Scholarships and IAPSS Travel Grants

IAPSS’ budget on grants is limited, as most of our incomes are from membership and events fees. However, we strongly believe that it is crucial to facilitate the participation of the most talented junior researchers of all specializations at IAPSS’ largest annual event. Therefore, there will be a call launched for applications for:
IAPSS Scholarships – special grants awarded to maximum two students who demonstrate both academic excellence and pressing financial need, covering expenses up to 1000 € each.
IAPSS Travel Grants – a limited number of partial grants distributed on the basis of academic merits and financial needs, covering expenses up to 500 € each.

Once you submit an abstract, you will see a confirmation of reception, which will also include the link for the application form for IAPSS Scholarships and IAPSS Travel Grants. The deadline to apply is December 8, 2017, while the notification of decision will be sent by December 22, 2017.

Please be advised that both IAPSS Scholarships and IAPSS Travel Grants are competitive and the travel grants usually only cover a part of individual travel costs. We therefore encourage you to start searching for other third-party funds at an early stage. Please note as well that all grants are handed out on-site in cash (EUR) during the conference – not in advance, and upon the condition of successful accomplishment of the paper presentation.

The IAPSS Fee Waiver is offered to Student Research Committee and Academic Think Tank members, who successfully present their research at the World Congress, and other selected guests from IAPSS’ partner associations. Please note that you cannot apply for the IAPSS Fee Waiver.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Berfu Tarcan, Congress Panels Coordinator, at wc-panels@iapss.org. We look forward to your submission.
