Rio de Janeiro

“(In)equality in Brazil and the country’s role in the World”

takes places during

Sunday, December 2nd – Saturday, December 8th, 2018

(Programme days: Monday 3rd – Friday 7th)

Deadline for Applications: September 5th, 2018

Following two successful IAPSS trips to BRICS, this year IAPSS is launching its Call for Application for the Study Trip to Brazil with the theme (In)equality in Brazil and the country’s role in the world. Study Trip will take place in November 2018. Five days of very intensive and enriching programme will be spent in the fascinating Brazilian city – Rio de Janeiro.

Use this opportunity and join us for this unique Study Trip to the largest country of the South America that plays a leading role in the region. Come with us and spend 5 intensive programme days in Rio de Janeiro, the main cultural hub of the country. Besides beautiful nature and vibrant, cosmopolitan life, Rio de Janeiro offers a great opportunity to see booming financial and political life as well, benefiting from being a capital city of Brazil until 1960.

About the Programme

The theme aims at exploring and understanding two dimensions of Brazilian reality: its local context and the country’s global role. Given the IAPSS’s interest in politics, both of them will be looked at with regards to issues like access to resources, power and justice. In particular, this trip intends to investigate issues such as corruption, economic recovery of the country and issues related to social and economic equality.

Brazil offers an unique insight into the two realities of the social and economic system: highly developed international companies that strive to follow social responsibility rules, accompanied by others that are still lagging behind while engaging in child labour, slavery and environmental degradation. How have these disparities emerged? What are the impacts of globalisation? How does the transformation from being a regional power to the international potential superpower looks in practice? These are the questions that will be asked during our Study Trip. The program features visits and meetings with academia and both and public and private institutions in order to see the realities from different perspectives, thus gaining comprehensive understanding of the local and global context of today ́s Brazil.
